Actually, don't go to a regular doctor, you want to find a sleep disorders center. Please don't think I am trying to say anything about you being crazy, but you need to see a psychologist trained in behavioral sleep medicine. The research shows that behavioral treatments work better for insomnia than drugs. Also, the medical docs will be able to run the right kind of tests on you. You could have hormone issues or maybe other drugs you are taking are having a weird interaction. A general practitioner will not have the training or the time to look for these types of oddities (they are trained to give the most common fix...in this case something like ambien...because that will take care of 95% of what walks through the door.). You need a specialist.

By the way, next time you go 12 days without sleep, you need to document it. The world record is 11 days.

Google behavioral treatment of insomnia. I am not trying to push some weird "alternative" treatment. This is very mainstream. Seeing a psychologist does not mean that you are crazy. Sleep is a behavior and they can modify that behavior just like they can help someone get over their fear of heights or quit smoking.

Oh, and the other guy that suggested earplugs is not a bad idea. If I had your problem, I would have blackout shades and my walls covered in egg crate foam or something. I would basically turn my bedroom into a recording studio.
