OP here - It was (or actually still is) a Baptist church. She was and probably still is involved in the church office, a secretary or accountant or something like that. Her husband - a deacon. Ah... should have guessed. Baptists are easily the most screwed-up denomination, in my experience. Should go back and figure out what Sola Fide means for why they exist in the first place, and stop trying to compete with Catholics on moral posturing.
