While some like the OP believe that technology wins wars most in the military would tell you it’s the people doing the fighting that win wars. History has shown us over and over again that a motivated grass roots force of armed civilians could be extremely effective against a technologically and numerically superior force and has in many cases defeated the superior force. I’ve spent a good portion of my life in the military and despite what some here ( NJHatter) will believe it’s very rare to find anyone who serves that wants to go to war and would find it exceedingly difficult to take part in any kind of military action against its own population.

In Syria, it's not merely armed civilians opposing the government. Significant segments of the military have gone over to the rebels. But your basic point is valid: in revolution, it's not the technology that makes the difference, it's the social forces.

Crud, you mentioned me. Now I have to give my say in your point.
I feel the honor for warriors who fight. But I reconize that fighting isn't always the answer. Only true lunatic murderers want to kill for killing sake. If the army never really did anything besides just look/go through the motions of a well trained fighting force. I could live with that.
The true fighters/soldiers understand the true horrors of war. And they are not nice. So please don't lump me in with the war hawks. Those are the extremist right wing.
