American gun lovers who are under the illusion that the 'right' to bear arms will protect them against a rogue government, I've got one word for you: Syria. Their guns aren't much use over there against government forces with tanks and helicopters, are they? All they've succeeded in doing is provoke a genocidal blood bath. That's not exactly an illogical outcome if the same situation arose in the US.

Bang goes the gun fondlers' credibility!

Keep up with the news. You might notice how the rebels are winning even against the tanks, helicopters, etc.
It took longer than that to win the American Revolution, and most of the technology used by both sides was the same.
I'd say they're doing pretty well.

Yeah, there's what, 200 million guns in the US? And, oh, a few thousand in the armed services? Yeah, we're not Sparta. Here, numbers count for everything. Besides, the military wouldn't actually turn on its people. From the vibe I'm getting from a lot of servicemen, they'd turn on the government faster than they would civilians.

The only reason civilians are not stomped over like grass in the field, is because each nation tries to look like good guys. Otherwise, it's exactly like that last Rambo film. A militant force killing and burning towns to the ground.

I get the feeling that if something ever came down in this country, you would either go running to your neighbor, who has guns and beg for protection or go running to whichever side is winning and begging for mercy. Either way, you will die like the coward you are...pussy.

That it? Name calling? Just so ya know, I have some actual swords and bows and arrows. Old school, I know. But as long as you retrieve your ammo, you never run out.

Still, that post does say something about yourself.

The "right" to bear arms was written during the time of Flintlock pistols. Clearly nothing has changed since then... right?

I would rather die with a hot gun in my hand then being shot while hiding under a bed like a coward. If you are not willing to fight for your freedom, you deserve whatever you get.

While some like the OP believe that technology wins wars most in the military would tell you it’s the people doing the fighting that win wars. History has shown us over and over again that a motivated grass roots force of armed civilians could be extremely effective against a technologically and numerically superior force and has in many cases defeated the superior force. I’ve spent a good portion of my life in the military and despite what some here ( NJHatter) will believe it’s very rare to find anyone who serves that wants to go to war and would find it exceedingly difficult to take part in any kind of military action against its own population.

In Syria, it's not merely armed civilians opposing the government. Significant segments of the military have gone over to the rebels. But your basic point is valid: in revolution, it's not the technology that makes the difference, it's the social forces.

Crud, you mentioned me. Now I have to give my say in your point.

I feel the honor for warriors who fight. But I reconize that fighting isn't always the answer. Only true lunatic murderers want to kill for killing sake. If the army never really did anything besides just look/go through the motions of a well trained fighting force. I could live with that.

The true fighters/soldiers understand the true horrors of war. And they are not nice. So please don't lump me in with the war hawks. Those are the extremist right wing.

I disagree. There has been the odd occasion when 'people power' has prevailed, but set that against, for example, the tens of millions murdered by Stalin and his state 'security' forces. Nine times out of ten 'the people' don't get a look in when the state decides to stomp on them. You end up like our ridiculous hero above: a corpse. So what if you were brave? You're dead, and in my book that's a bum deal.
