Not "100 years ago" but for the past couple of hundred years. That said, their (our) population is not growing and their (our) per capita (per person) energy needs and wants may be decreasing due to improved insulation and efficiency of motors and such. And that was before we noticed that we were burning a lot more stuff than before.
