All drugs should be legalized. This would eliminate most of the violence south of the border. As half the US population is on drugs, a tax on sales could pay off the national debt in record time, solve the Social Security problem, and still leave the Feds enough lucre to finance 10 wars of attrition on the side.

First:
The U.S. is making more money on the drug war then any taxes would bring in.
Second:
That goes in the same ring on other social issues which are illegal. If you legalize drugs then you could legalize everything else. You can't pick and choose your evils! All though people do this anyway.
Third:
What kind of drugs are we talking about? Weed? Crack?
Weed would definately mellow us out, and that would be a benefit to U.S. society. Crack would turn us all into the most lying back stabbing country in the world! Crack heads should be put out of their misery and shot!

How exactly does the US govt. make money on the drug war? The drug was is all about expenditures. The feds do seize cars and houses and such, but surely not as much as they'd take in on taxes on pot and other recreational drugs.

A tax would have to be a percentage on the sales, depending on the demand. How many people would actually get into it (unless your talking about crack) in witch case the government would clean up because the little crack heads would be buying it 24/7. THE GOVERNMENT POCKETS ALL SORTS OF POSSESSIONS SEIZED. Also their are political pay offs. Or didn't you see the movie, Scarface!

This is the dumbest idea anyone could ever have. You're a fan of ron paul aren't you? You have the same train of thought as that moron. Do you know how much gang violence would increase if everything was made legal? They would be able to hang out all day pushing drugs without any worry about getting busted, this would lead to more shootings and stabbings as they fight for the best spots to push. And before you say it, I know you are going to say good then they can kill each other, but thats not the case. Far more innocents die when gangs fight then actual gang members.
Then theres the fact that driving while high will skyrocket. Car crashes caused by people being high on weed is already the seconds leading cause in some states behind being drunk. Now you want to legalize dozens of drugs? I also fail to see why you think the violence would be eliminated south of the border. Most of the drugs in the united states are brought here by the drug cartels from mexico. They would still be the number one supplier. The violence would just be brought home.

OP here. First of all, Ron Paul can eat shit. Second of all, there would be no gang violence -- the exact opposite. How much gang violence do you see relating to alcohol? None. Because it's legal. When you can buy crack at Walmart the gangs are out of business.

The gangs? During Prohibition the gangs sold alcohol because the corporations were prohibited from doing so. With the end of prohibition, the alcohol business was taken over by the corporations. That's exactly what would happen with pot, cocaine, and heroin. As soon as they were legal, the corporations would take over the production and distribution.

Where the hell do you get the 10% of alcohol users consume 90% of it? If that isn't a pulled out of your ass statistic I don't know what is. You also aren't very bright. If you knew anything about prohibition you would know the violence that would follow. The drug cartels are worth billions of dollars and have the best weapons money can buy pretty much. They are not only holding their own but actually beating the mexican army. Guys specifically trained to fight the cartels, not just your run of the mill soldier. Now what do you think is going to happen when you take away their way of making money? You think they will just say ok and go home?
