Even if it was spell check defaulting to "English" and not "US-English," it's strange that she kept them spelled that way.

Spell checkers generally show what's auto-corrected when writing; they'll otherwise indicate possible misspelled words. However, I suppose she may have lacked the perception to notice they were modified, if auto-corrected.
