I am in Canada so I get to see, first hand but from afar, how terrible the US is. I live in a border city and across the river is the US....its across a fucking river and it couldn't be more different. Its like a fucking warzone over there.

America has chosen to be the worlds "police force" taking an opposite attitude it had before world war two. It will defend helpless countries againced mad oppressors so another "Hitler" won't take advantage of a poloitical situation. If you learn how the political landscape has changed since 1945, you may understand America and how it is viewed by others.

I used to look at the inequality in America and shake my head. Then I realised that the "American Dream" is that everyone has the opportunity to get rich, not necessarily that everyone is looked after. It's in contrast to the rest of the developed world, where the over-arching goal is that society is prosperous as a whole. Once I realised that, badly-managed Government networks like state education and medicare made a lot more sense. Government is seen as having a responsibility to provide a basic safety net, but for anything other than the bare essentials, it's basically in the hands of private enterprise.

I think American society is easier to understand if you stop thinking about it as a monoculture, but more as 250 million private individuals, each trying to climb to the top of the pile.

Short version: Way too much religion, capitalism, guns, racists, etc...

I've read somewhere that the United Sates was voted ``most hated country`` in the world. Americans are not welcome anywhere,you are loud and obnoxious,you have a nigger for p********,you shop at Wall-Mart,you have rednecks,inbreeds and you're fat. This is how the world sees you!

And we see you as another country that wants our help all the time when someone attacks you. If not for the USA u would be a slave to some communist dictator.

From the outside looking in, one of the deep conflicts in American society would be the desire for individual freedom and the necessity for collective cooperation. Even the Founding Fathers were split down the middle with this, with Adams saying that strong Government (with strong taxes) was needed to keep the US a functioning state, and Jefferson adamantly opposed to any sort of federal Government structure, and really, thought a sort of agrarian anarchy was the ideal societal organisation. This conflict raises its head today with the debate about medicare and gun control. To the rest of the world, it's a silly question.

Health care should be left with the public sector, because it's not an industry where making money is the goal. It's cheaper to get everyone to pool together their money (i.e. with taxes) and establish comprehensive medical care, rather than get a bunch of private insurance companies do the same thing but keep a bit of money for themselves for profit.

Gun control.... who the fuck needs semi-automatics????????? After a while, it stops being a question of individual rights, it's a matter of not getting your head blown off because of the flood of firearms in the country.

^^ But why the fuck should someone work his ass off everyday to pay for some lazy fucks that will not ever work? Why should my money go to some bitch whos idea of a making a good living is to have as many kids as she can? I take care of myself and ask no one to pay my way, so why the fuck should I care about the trash that refuses to take care of their lives? I am not even taking into consideration all the the illegal aleins that come to this Country just to have babies and jump onto the welfare system. Fuck them let them starve or die of AIDS.
