There is a possibility that you may have added some 'private' upload(s) to the gallery in question and this has 'hidden' it due to the fact that only fully public media will display in a gallery.
The reason it became visible again could be that the upload(s) that were private (subscriber only etc) have been changed to public, or removed from the site (and therefore the gallery).
