I confess that I work for the Human Resource department at my job. Since my employer is a huge public employer, there are rules and laws we have to abide by when we hire someone. Basically they try to make it so that no one has an advantage and we can't hire friends and family. We just opened up a lucrative position that people would literally kill someone to get. For no other purpose but to play God, I decided that I would pick who got the job even though I have no authority to do so.
Since 400 people applied, my employer decided to test the top 200. The top 10 who scored the highest would move on. It was my job to correct and score those 200 tests. I separated the tests of the people that I liked from the rest. Then I went through the other 190 and made little marks on the scantrons so the scanner would mark half the test wrong even though they may have gotten most of them right. I then corrected the incorrect answers on the tests of the people I did like so they scored higher and would move on.
I did it because I want someone who I can manipulate, control and string along at work. I also did it because I wanted to see if I could get away with it and it killed a lot of time.

But the fact is, people often regret when someone they like at work takes a position of power. Either jealousy sets in, or they discover the power goes to the person's head and makes them unpleasant to work with. In other words, it's highly unlikely you will be able to do much manipulation or stringing along. . .
